Chapters & Chill

Bookworms, assemble! If pages turn you on more than swiping right, get ready to indulge in a literarily intoxicating adventure. We’re about to take bibliophilia to new heights with a NYC library rendezvous that will make your inner reading nerd swoon…

Novel Romance

  • Themed Crawl: Choose a focus to guide your library selection. Maybe you focus on grand architectural spaces (like the main NYPL branch!), children’s sections with beautiful illustrations, or libraries with cozy reading nooks.
  • Transport Twist: Add to the “journey” feeling by using different modes of transit between libraries: subway, bus, even a ferry if it works out!
  • Literary Treats: Pack a small backpack with book-themed snacks: “The Grapes of Wrath” with cheese and crackers, “Charlotte’s Web” mini pretzel sticks, etc.

Read All About It

  • Librarian’s Choice: Ask a librarian for a hidden gem recommendation on their shelves – something unusual or under-appreciated that you wouldn’t normally pick up.
  • Blind Date: Some libraries have wrapped books with only a short thematic description on the outside. Pick one, find your cozy reading spot, and discover a new literary surprise together.
  • History Hunt: Larger libraries often have dedicated archives. See if you can find a historical newspaper from a significant shared date for you two (birthday, anniversary), or look up old maps of your favorite NYC neighborhood.

Checking Out

  • Poetry Out Loud: Poetry is often meant to be heard. Take turns reading favorite poems to each other.
  • Start a Story: One of you begins a short story with a sentence. The other continues, and you alternate until you reach a hilarious or touching conclusion.
  • It’s Graphic: If you stumble on a beautifully illustrated picture book, take joy in reading it together, no matter your age! Maybe even let it inspire a little art of your own.

Bonus Tip: If you enjoy the date, consider getting library cards and making it a recurring date! It transforms the experience into an ongoing exploration of learning and growth!
