Be-Cause I’m Choosy
- Skill Share: Do either of you have special skills that might be useful to a non-profit? (Graphic design, social media savvy, handyman skills, etc.) Find ways to use them!
- Explore Together: If you’re not sure where to start, check online resources like VolunteerMatch, Idealist, or the Red Cross. Browse opportunities together to find something that excites you both.
- Think Thematically: Want your volunteering to be the start of a deeper connection? Choose a cause related to your shared interests (animal lovers help at a shelter, foodies volunteer at a soup kitchen, etc.).
Spreading Smiles
- The Gratitude Challenge: During breaks, share something you’re grateful for about the experience or grateful for about each other. This keeps energy positive, even if the work is tough.
- Share the Love: Take photos (if allowed) and post about your experience on social media. Encourage friends and family to get involved as well.
- The Learning Doesn’t Stop: Take a few minutes after you leave to talk about what surprised you, what you might do differently next time, and if you want to volunteer there again.
Bonus Tip: If you loved the organization, set a small goal to raise funds or collect supplies for them (ask what they really need first.) Also, consider making volunteering a regular thing, even once a quarter can make a huge difference to organizations in your local community!
